Twenty-year-old Anna Nalick is the rare artist who makes you want to grab pop music's wheels by the spokes so they'll stop spinning so fast. "Wait," the 11 songs on this debut disc say collectively to the newly initiated, "there's something substantial here." An onslaught of substance is more what it feels like, actually, and it grabs hold early. Though each of these songs is distinctive enough to avoid congealing with the others into a gorgeous glop of introspection, heavy sighs, and reflection, leadoff track and first single "Breathe (2 A.M.)" works small wonders as a flagship song. Its simple, lonely piano swirls into guitars that stop just short of rocking, allowing plenty of room for Nalick's unaffected voice to spill in. When it does, the music turns forest-thick and dreamy--influences run the Tori Amos indie singer-songwriter gamut, with streaks of Jewel and Alanis Morissettespiking out--but there's a naturalness and urgency to her singing that saves every chorus and verse from clouding over. Now that she's cautiously alighted into pop territory, sophisticated listeners will do well to dust off their welcome mats. --Tammy La Gorce

After the release of Farmhouse, Phish took a two-year break during which the Vermont jam band released a slew of live albums and splintered into several side projects: Singer-guitarist Trey Anastasio made a solo disc and recorded with Oysterhead, his all-star outfit with former Primus bassist Les Claypool and former Police drummer Stewart Copeland; bassist Mike Gordon collaborated with Leo Kottke and made a movie about Gov't Mule; drummer Jon Fishman made an album with Pork Tornado; and keyboardist Page McConnell released an album as Vida Blue. Despite anxiety that the separation may have disrupted the band's raw chemistry, when the members of Phish regrouped in the studio under the pretense of rehearsing for a New Year's Eve show they walked out with this album four days later.

Roots Volume 1 for $4.01
It's entirely appropriate that the cover photo here--Merle Haggard seated in front of a fireplace and surrounded by the albums of his favorite country singer--bears more than a passing resemblance to Bob Dylan's Bringing It All Back Home. On Roots, Volume 1, Hag brings it home here by honoring some of his earliest influences, recording their songs in the swinging, stripped-down honky-tonk style popular during the middle of the 20th century. Merle covers Hank Thompson and Hank Williams, but he devotes the most time to Lefty Frizzell. Indeed, Merle sings classics like "Always Late" and "If You've Got the Money" in a voice brimming with Lefty's patented curlicued phrasing. What's more, he's signed up Frizzell's old lead guitarist, Norm Stephens, to reprise his most indelible licks. The highlights come, though, when Haggard sings his own songs, particularly "More Than My Old Guitar," where Merle not only insists he loves his wife more than his six string but more than "God loves the poor." --David Cantwell
